YOUTH
God is still speaking, and so are our youth. The call to prioritize youth in the church has been heard. To that end, a Southern Conference United Church of Christ youth event has been planned, with an open invitation for persons in rising grades 6 – 12 (and graduating seniors) to gather in Charlotte NC. Lock in the dates - July 7-10, 2026 – for this gathering. It is being held at the Sonesta Lower South End, 5700 Westpark Drive, Charlotte NC.
Planners envision a festive setting prompting smiles, embracing arms, sharing songs, enjoying the pool, and rides at Carowinds. In the stretches during and between these times, imagine forming relationships with other youth, making new friends, experiencing discovery in workshops, sharing compassion through community projects, and embracing a dialogue around mindful topics and issues that matter.
As the event draws to a close, these experiences of relationship building and shared moments will open doors to a youth led closing and a pool party full of games, food and a DJ.
The event calls for fixing eyes, following paths, and framing faith. “It’s going to be fire!” say the prophets of this time.

Into the Deep: A Southern Conference Delegation Reflection on the United Church of Christ General Synod 35
In preparing for Synod, Rev. Dr. Edward Davis, Southern Conference Minister, aimed to create a delegation that reflected both the wisdom of our elders and the vibrancy of our youth. That’s how Liz, a 16-year-old from Peace UCC in Greensboro (pastored by Rev. Dr. Tom Warren), was invited to join us. Her mother, a former youth delegate, was thrilled and accepted on her behalf.
But Liz had doubts.
With her permission, here’s part of what she shared:
“Hi, Mrs. Belinda… I backed out because I was scared. I didn’t know anyone, and I let fear get the best of me.”
What moved me most was what came next:
“But I realized I shouldn’t have. I want to go. If you’ll still let me, I promise I won’t back out again.”
That moment gave rise to General Synod’s reflection, which is a demonstration of what our denomination stands for—“Fear Can’t Live Where Faith Imagines”—a truth that echoes the spirit of the United Church of Christ and the transformative work of General Synod. It’s at Synod where hearts are opened, voices are lifted, and bold, faithful imagination becomes action. In that sacred space, delegates of all ages and backgrounds grapple with the tough questions, engage in courageous conversations, and reimagine what it means to be the Church in a complex world. Liz’s journey mirrors that same courageous shift—from hesitation to hope, from fear to faith.
Liz joined our multigenerational delegation with grace, curiosity, and joy. She was one of several first-time youths, like Taejon, Giselle, and Aden, among them, who, alongside new and seasoned adult delegates, formed a sacred circle of diverse voices. What they brought home from Kansas City wasn’t just a report—it was a testimony.
As the sacred gathering came to a close, Rev. Dr. Edward Davis offered a prayer to our delegation that was more than benediction—it was a blessing of commissioning and safe travels. With deep gratitude, he affirmed each delegate for their faithful service, and he turned to our young people, speaking words they will not soon forget. He told them how profoundly proud he was—not just of their presence, but of their courageous service to the broader church. In that moment, it was clear: they had not only shown up—they had shined.
Reflections from the Youth Participants:
Liz Stojadinovic: A youth delegate reflected on the unforgettable community, justice workshops, and vibrant spiritual experiences that deepened friendships and faith.
Taejon McInnis: A young adult delegate highlighted the friendships, committee work, and spiritual insights gained, alongside fun outings like a visit to the Kansas City Zoo.
Giselle Glasgow: A youth delegate found Synod transformative as a teen, seeing firsthand a Church that welcomes all and learning that faith requires both courage and compassion.
Aden Judge: A young adult delegate, experience at General Synod 35 was both sobering and sanctifying. He encountered theological tensions that challenged his convictions, especially around 'open and affirming' discourse. Though grieved by applause for justice, but silence at the name of Jesus, he emerged with greater confidence in his ability to defend the faith. Scripture-centered and deeply grateful for mentors like Rev. Dr. Davis, Aden left empowered to pursue truth, grace, and gospel-rooted justice with renewed boldness.

Hearing testimony of one-armed wrestler
Submitted by Pastor Jim Simonds
Mount Zion UCC, China Grove, N.C.
On the Sunday following the youth event, 4 youth from Mt. Zion in China Grove gave a report on their experiences. They were inspired by the testimony of the one-armed wrestler. They were so thankful for the team that led. They enjoyed small groups and seminars. Thank you Belinda for putting together this great blessing.
