“The Rev. Jimmy J. Norred Clergy Challenge”
For those of you who attended The Southern Conference 53rdAnnual Gathering this past June in Greensboro, you will recall Rev. Jimmy J. Norred, retired Southern Conference United Church of Christ minister, stood up and made a compelling, heartfelt appeal to all clergy. He said, “The Clergy owe for the right to do ministry in the name of the Association, Conference and the National Church.” He challenged each clergy to give $1000, but if you could not do this amount, at least $500,on an annual basis beginning with this year 2018to the Southern Conference. While these are the challenged amounts, starting with giving something is still a way to give back as a clergy in the Southern Conference.
Brothers and Sisters, as scripture teaches us inEph. 1:3 (NET), blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ. Rev. Norred is right, we who serve or have served in the Southern Conference are so wonderfully blessed to have been granted this privilege made possible by those who formed the Southern Conference in 1965. They understood then that it took financial resources to move this Conference forward and today is no exception!
I have named this appeal, “The Rev. Jimmy J. Norred Clergy Challenge.” In the attached letter, you will see that Rev. Norred has already led by example. He sent his $1000the week following the Southern Conference Annual Gathering in June. No matter what category of clergy you fall under in the Southern Conference, this challenge is for you!
