Solar Panel Success. Elon Community Church UCC recently undertook a challenge – to raise money to add 60 solar panels to the 20 we already have on the roof of our Community Life Center. A year earlier, Gary and Jane Smith of Community UCC in Raleigh had shared their successful fund-raising strategies with us. These included appeals on social media and in church newsletters and emails, weekly advocacy during worship, and a children's banner depicting panels as money was raised. We created a fund-raising site at We added elements such as an online auction and a silent auction coupled with an Earth Sunday potluck lunch and celebration. It was great fun! We exceeded our fund-raising goal and did it ahead of schedule! The panels are to be installed this summer and dedicated by fall. We will also apply to Duke Energy for the rebate they offer to nonprofits. For more information, email David Andes at
