Join us in Celebration of the Council's 75th Anniversary
Please join us on May 18 as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the North Carolina Council of Churches.
We will gather at Duke University for a time of reflection and fellowship, dinner, and a celebratory service led by the Rev. Hope Morgan Ward.
In this special year, we invite you to reflect on the Council's past with us and look forward to its brilliant future.
For the past 75 years, the history of our state has been reflected in the work of the North Carolina Council of Churches. When segregation shamed us, people of faith stepped forward through the Council and spoke truth to power. When war has been waged, the Council has given voice to the peace makers. When farmworkers have been treated unfairly, forced to work and live under brutal conditions, the Council has advocated on their behalf. In more recent years, the Council has continued and expanded its work for justice, peace and Christian unity, working on behalf of immigrants, care of God's creation, sustainable local agriculture, and health care. By speaking for the least of these, the Council has been a crucial faith voice for progressive social justice in North Carolina. As we celebrate the Council's 75th anniversary, we also celebrate the many people whose work inspires and sustains us, motivates us going forward, and challenges us to live up to our history.
Click here to join us on May 18. If you have already registered for dinner online, please remember that we must receive payment in advance to guarantee your meal. Additional information on directions and parking will be sent on Friday, May 14. Contact George Reed, Executive Director for more information.

Prayer Request for North Carolina Religious Leaders
The North Carolina Council of Churches is asking you to join in prayers for the Council's member bodies and their leaders. That might be during your personal
prayers or it might be included in coporate prayers in your congregation. It might be a notice in your church bulletin and/or newsletter. Perhaps a reminder on a church bulleting board.
Sincerely,
George Reed

Release a Butterfly for a Loved One!
Newton, NC - For the third year Abernethy Laurels will be holding their annual Butterfly Release on June 6th at 3 p.m. in the Pavilion Courtyard.
If you have never been to a butterfly release, it is an awesome celebration of life, not to be missed. Every participant comes away touched to their very core in some special way. The simultaneous release of hundreds of Monarch butterflies is a wonderful reflection of loved ones that have been lost, or loved ones you wish to honor. Once implemented, it is a beautiful site watching the butterflies emerge from their restful state, and slowly become more active. They will sit on your hand, arm, a shoulder and finally fly off to find nectar plants and a place to roost for the night.
There will be entertainment and refreshments along with a short program before the releasing of the butterflies - all for a $20 donation, which goes directly to the Campus Enrichment Fund. The Fund is used to enrich life on the campus for all Abernethy Laurels residents such as renovations, therapy equipment, fitness equipment, and refurbishing walking trails. To reserve your butterfly please contact Carol Rooney at 828-465-8028.
Abernethy Laurels, a not-for-profit active retirement community, offers affordable living options with full-service accommodations on a fee-for-service basis. It is located on 120 beautiful, rolling acres off Highway 16 south of Newton, a convenient drive to Hickory, Asheville and Charlotte. For more information, visit us on the web at www.abernethylaurels.org, follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AbernethyLaurels or call 828-465-8552.

A LETTER FROM A NEW CHURCH START PASTOR IN ENCA
Dear Friends:
My name is J. Michelle Mathis, and I am a new church start pastor in Eastern North Carolina. I am pastor of Agape for All Ministries in Durham, NC. I have been given the opportunity to participate in a short term mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The week-long mission trip will begin June 22, 2010. We will be working at a school located in El Tamarindo where we will conduct a summer Bible School for 30 children as well as perform maintenance projects for the school's facility.
I need your help and am asking each of you to participate with me as a sending partner. Financially, I need to raise at least $1600.00 to cover transportation, lodging, school supplies, paint and construction materials and relief supplies for Haiti. I also ask for your prayers. Please send your tax deductible donations made out to MCC and mail them to 2010 Mission Trip -DC, 474 Ridge Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. On the memo line, put my name, J. MIchelle Mathis. Thank you for your help in this matter. I look foward to sharing my experience with you and your church when I return home.
Sincerely,
J. Michelle Mathis
