Eastern North Carolina Association Annual Meeting / Fall 2011 Summary Notes (by Nora Foust)

The Eastern North Carolina Association of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ met at Umpstead Park in Raleigh, NC on October 1st. The gathering opened with worship led by Rev. Dian Jackson of Mt. Zion UCC in Rockingham. Much of the morning was spent with representatives from the Southern Conference Board of Directors going over the restructure plan and working in small groups to affirm and revise the plan. Following lunch, the president, Rev. Yvonne Riddick offered her report asking "Who do we work for?" and reminding us that the answer is God, not ourselves. Following, Rev. Vertie Powers reminding our association that when you can’t see where the restructure is going to just say, "I will trust in the Lord and that when you can’t see the dollars being stretched far enough, just say, "I will trust in the Lord." This was not instruction to just sit on our laurels, but to be responsible to giving God what we have been given, to use these gifts to move the association and conference forward. We welcomed into full standing two congregations, Greater Grace Christian Church in Youngsville and Life's Journey UCC in Burlington. We closed our gathering with a mini-celebration of the ministry and service of Rev. Vertie Powers, Janelle Bunn and Linda Carter to our association.
